Yesterday marked the beginning of the 15th-anniversary edition of the Ivanov School for Young Leaders, which will take place over the next two weeks. From October 1-13, 2024, the school will be conducted in a hybrid format, combining online sessions with in-person activities in Ohrid. This year, under the theme “Leadership for Peace,” young participants have an exceptional opportunity to enhance their skills and develop visions for achieving lasting and sustainable global peace.
The 15th-anniversary edition of the Ivanov School for Young Leaders was officially opened by the patron and initiator of this project, former President Dr. Gjorge Ivanov, who emphasized the importance of this initiative. Over the years, it has inspired, prepared, and encouraged new leaders to tackle the challenges of modern times through collaboration and the creation of positive change.
President Ivanov highlighted the qualities of successful leaders in today’s world—leaders who focus on establishing, fostering, and maintaining peace. Expressing concern over global instability and conflicts emerging in various regions, he stressed that peace and dialogue are crucial for resolving international tensions and building lasting harmony. He called for greater cooperation among nations and underscored the importance of diplomatic efforts in preventing wars and promoting human rights and the security of all citizens.
In light of current global events, Ivanov noted that while much attention is given to wars and conflicts, little focus is placed on achieving peace. He advocated for intensifying discussions on peacebuilding and creating platforms for collaboration, rather than concentrating on military strategies and weaponry. According to him, peace initiatives must be at the center of our efforts, as only through understanding and compromise can we achieve a stable and secure future. He emphasized that peace is an immensely complex and costly endeavor, yet essential for the survival of human civilization.
The participants of the 15th School were also addressed by former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Commending President Ivanov’s initiative, he congratulated the school on its 15-year milestone and acknowledged the remarkable achievements of the Ivanov School for Young Leaders. He also recalled his previous lecture to the third cohort of the school during his official visit to North Macedonia in July 2012. Ban Ki-moon encouraged the young participants to strive for success and significant achievements, emphasizing the importance of learning and practicing the concept of global citizenship.
Ban described global citizenship as encompassing tolerance, goodwill, compassion, and selflessness. If young leaders embody these characteristics, they will, as global citizens, achieve much more and create a better future for everyone. He underlined that embracing global citizenship is key to becoming truly successful leaders who can address humanity’s pressing challenges.
The Ivanov School for Young Leaders is a unique platform for talented young individuals from diverse societal backgrounds, each bringing rich experiences and ideas. Participants are carefully selected based on their academic achievements, leadership potential, and dedication to social and community change. They are identified as future leaders who will play crucial roles in creating a peaceful and prosperous future. This year’s school includes around 40 participants, with one-third coming from abroad, reflecting its international character.
The program is designed to enhance participants’ leadership skills, critical thinking, capacity for collaboration, and ability to initiate and implement positive changes. Through lectures, workshops, special sessions, panel discussions, and practical projects, participants will learn how to harness their potential to build peace and collectively address global challenges. Approximately 20 lecturers and more than 30 panelists and speakers from North Macedonia and abroad will share their knowledge and experience with the participants.
The school is organized by the Office of Former President Ivanov in partnership with the International Center “Alliance of Civilizations” and the Ivanov School of Leaders Alumni Association (ISLAA).
With the ultimate goal of investing in future and potential leaders, the project is fully supported by the country’s business sector. Several socially responsible companies from North Macedonia, some involved since the school’s inception, serve as sponsors and supporters.
The School for Young Leaders is an initiative by President Gjorge Ivanov, launched at the beginning of his first term. The first International Training for Young Leaders took place in 2010. Since then, the school has hosted 14 cohorts, involving approximately 550 young people from North Macedonia and abroad, representing diverse academic and professional backgrounds. Over 350 renowned lecturers from North Macedonia, Europe, and around the world have delivered lectures as part of the program.
In 2018, the Ivanov School for Young Leaders was recognized as the Best Socially Responsible Project in Europe for 2017 by the World Investment Forum of Business Angels.
